I liked this movie, probably for the same reason as everybody else: the visuals. Pandora was quite sumptuous and found myself saying “oooh pretty!!!” a lot in my head. The plot is a bit tired (or, I guess I should say the main character is a bit tired) but oh well, Neytiri was the best! Kick more ass Neytiri! Yay!

I totally agree with this, Pandora looks amazing with its floating jellyfish thingys and its floating mountain thingys, the plot and somewhat flat and stereotypical characters aren’t really anything new.

I couldn’t stand watching Avatar. And so couldn’t any of my friends. I think we are too elitist now to watch a movie solely for its visuals. I found it annoying how they shoved so much crap into each shot to show off the 3D. Every time there was a wide panning shot I thought “oh right, that whole scene was just there to give me some sense of depth but now it’s just a 5 minute long scene with lots of irrelevant stuff.” Ugh, everything about Avatar makes me angry, especially all those user reviews on Metacritic. I have given hours of deep analysis on how Avatar is a bad movie – a good tech demo but a bad movie – and I still haven’t vented enough. I think I will only calm down if people stop saying that it’s the best movie of all time. Sorry about that rant. It’s all James Cameron’s fault. I can never watch Terminator 2 or Aliens ever again. Happy New Year btw 😀
You know, I didn’t even see it in 3D. Which is weird, but I don’t think I could stand 3 hours of it no matter how cool it looked. And I get your problems with it for sure; I’m definitely not one of those people who want to kill themselves so they can wake up in Pandora. But I don’t think it was a total fail, I mean I think beyond the visuals the world and its creatures were interesting, though I don’t think I’ll ever bother watching it again or thinking about it again.
And if you look at the comment from selfprofessednerd, the link is a synopsis for Pochantas and its exactly the same as Avatar. It’s really sad.

Yeah that Pocahontas thing was hilarious. I always thought it was more like Dances with wolves. But that’s not even my biggest problem with Avatar. District 9 is also full of the social commentary and it’s also a lot like Cry Freedom with the awesome Denzel. D9 just did it right. Sharlto Copley is just the best. He really made me care for the character so I was totally pumped when he kicked some ass. But in Avatar I have to relate to a crippled army veteran who always talks in that gruff voice and who – as all the other characters claim – is a complete idiot. So he walks right into their village, doesn’t speak a single word of their language, says he’s a warrior of a race the Navi don’t trust (They just closed down their effing schools) and they teach him all of their secrets without wanting anything in return… WTFFFFFFFF!!!!!! Why does Neytiri fall for that bumbling idiot? Because she’s always around him? Isn’t she in love with that other dude or was that an arranged marriage? Nobody can fly that big bird thing but that douche can although he’s been a Navi for three weeks? They could at least have gone the extra mile and put some kind of prophecy in there about how there will be a savior from another race. The story is already cliched as it is, so that wouldn’t have hurt it. Why Giovanni Ribisi? WHY? How can a total asshole be the head of alien assimilation operations? Why does it have to be the white guy saving the whole alien race? Just putting more limbs on an animal doesn’t make it alien. Dane Cook is not funny! I hear people were crying during that speech that he gave to the Navi. REALLY? With all of its mind numbing amounts of pathos? AARGHH! This movie gets my misanthropy up. You know what? I’m gonna post something nice now on you Christian Bale love letter.
Wow, you really have a lot to say about Avatar! I agree that the characters are very thinly drawn and that Sharlto Copley is the best ever. And I haven’t seen Dances with Wolves, but I have seen Avatar, so I guess that means I have seen it then…
I did think it was weird when Sully was like “I am a warrior” and the Na’vi dude was like “oh really? then I guess we’ll have to teach you ours ways too…so then you’ll know them as well.” What? Just because he says he’s a warrior they want to teach them their ways? And not even really to shove it in his face that he might be a ‘warrior’ in his world but ill-suited to compete with the Na’vi; it was basically like they were just teaching him for funtimes. And so far as that ‘savior from another race’ plotline, that actually was kind of in there (James Cameron is really on a roll!) with the fluffy tree things attaching to him because he was ‘special’.
Won’t it be hilarious if this movie wins an Oscar for best picture? And by hilarious I mean sad. Anyway, here’s a video to make you feel better:

That video was hilarious. When he said he’s into big girls who are into Avatars I thought he was referring to the girl from that youtube video, which I guess says more about me than about that dude.
I remember those fluffy flying tree thingies but I don’t buy it. It’s never mentioned again in the whole movie. As far as I know, those fluffy things could attach to any Na’Vi for shits and giggles. Maybe that was just Eywa saying: “Yo Neytiri! Take this idiot with you!” I’m trying to think of other protagonists that start out at or below average and go on to save the world over the course of three hours but no dice. It either takes a trilogy or they do it on a smaller scale.
Of course it will win Best Special Effects but if it wins Best Picture then wow. And by wow I mean WTF! Golden Globes are usually a good indicator of what will end up being nominated. From all the nominees I guess your pick would be Hurt Locker. Mine would be Up in the Air. I enjoyed Inglourious Basterds the most of all the noms but let’s face it. It’s far from perfect and too edgy to win one of the big awards. Those are all small budget movies which didn’t make lots of money. I think the Academy will vote for a more popular movie this year because they might want the Oscars to fare better on TV or something, so…

I really didn’t like Up in the Air that much. It started and ended in the same exact spot, if you know what I mean, and I didn’t feel very diffrent after watching it. So yes, I am definitely voting for The Hurt Locker!

The only post (Avatar-related) is way too long but I would like to know if one can make it through it. I promise the next one will be about something nice. Also, how do you feel about some personal one on one. I haven’t had a good talk in a while.
